:: Community Life updates from Dean Louise Smith

Governance Task Group

The Governance Task Group has been hard at work. Issues on the table range from jurisdiction to representation and checks and balances. Elijah Blanton arranged for a phone call with Tom Atlee, Antioch College alumnus and director of the National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation, to discuss the merits of consensus and dynamic facilitation. Currently, the group is looking at several models: the past Antioch structure, the notion of par polity, and our current structure with adaptations. There is an agreement in the group around shared values of community governance with representation from all segments of the College. The group also agreed that community meeting can continue to serve the purpose of education and information sharing, as well as processing issues relevant to the community as a whole. Governance Task Group meets on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. in McGregor 218. Meetings are open to the Antioch College community.

Council of Conveners

This week, the Council will continue its discussion of a proposal for creating organizations on campus. Also on the agenda are the events committee and the events process. Council of Conveners meets on Wednesday afternoons from 4 to 5 p.m. in McGregor 149. Meetings are open to the Antioch College community.

Community Standards Board

Jennifer Berman and the members of the Community Standards Board continue to research models of judicial procedures at other institutions. They will be consulting this week with restorative-justice/higher-ed guru Josh Bacon from James Madison University in Harrisburg, Virginia. Community Standards Board meets Monday nights from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Coretta Scott King Center.

Diversity Group

The Diversity Group is hosting a movie at the Little Art Theatre, followed by a discussion, on Wednesday, May 23, from 7 to 10 p.m. Diversity Group meets Mondays at 12 noon in the Coretta Scott King Center. All are welcome!

:: Antioch College to sponsor Yellow Springs Street Fair

The College has signed on as a lead sponsor of the 2012 Yellow Springs Street Fair, a unique festival that fills the streets of Yellow Springs with people enjoying a wonderful mix of vendors, food, and performers. This year, the summer event is Saturday, June 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the Music Festival starting at noon and lasting until 7 p.m.

During Street Fair, over 200 vendors join the Village’s 50 shops and galleries selling one-of-a-kind art, beautiful hand-crafted items, and unique imports. This year, you’ll find old favorites, like Crazy Uncle Jester’s hot sauces, as well as lots of new vendors, including Lady Creepshow’s vintage inspired accessories and interesting jewelry from Metalledwith.

Food from around the world is featured at Street Fair, including some great vegetarian fare. Relax at the Jackson Lytle Lewis Food Tent where you can also enjoy entertainment throughout the day. Acoustic musicians will perform all afternoon, in addition to the Egyptian Breeze Belly Dancers. You can also slip into one of the local restaurants for a delicious dining experience.

For a break from shopping, stop by the Music Festival & Beer Garden at the Bryan Center from noon to 7 p.m. Sample one of many specialty beers, including some delicious summer seasonals like Sam Adams Summer Ale, Sierra Nevada Summer Ale, Goose Island IPA, and 312, among others, as you listen to the great musical line-up presented by Peach’s Grill.

The event is free and open to the public. Handicapped parking is available at the Municipal Lot on Corry Street. Pets are not allowed at Street Fair by ordinance and owners with pets will be asked to leave.

:: Diversity Committee to present Night at the Movies

The Antioch College Diversity Committee will present a Night at the Movies featuring the film Higher Learning. The free event starts at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 23, at the Little Art Theatre in downtown Yellow Springs. A discussion about diversity will follow the movie.

Directed by John Singleton and featuring actors such as Omar Epps, Jennifer Connelly, Ice Cube, Tyra Banks, Regina King, and Busta Ryhmes, Higher Learning shows how people from different walks of life encounter racial tension, crime, responsibility, and the meaning of an education on a university campus.
