Thomas White Harvey of Portland, Oregon passed away on December 13, 2013.
He was born to the late Andrew Frank Harvey, Jr. and Martha White Harvey Chinnery, September 13, 1951, in Tupelo, Mississippi. Tom graduated from Tupelo High School in 1969. He received a BA in Environmental Studies from Antioch College in 1974, an MS in Geography from The Pennsylvania State University in 1982, and a Ph.D in Geography from the University of Minnesota in 1990. He married Jean Ellen Spraker of Wilmington, Delaware on July 27th, 1974 in Cooperstown, NY.
Tom was a professor of Geography at Portland State University until his passing. His academic interests were in urban geography, urban planning, cultural landscape studies, and the geography of North America. Previously, he worked as a city planner for the City of St. Paul, Minnesota and for the Historic Preservation Office of the Minnesota Historical Society. In Portland, Tom was an active member of the Pearl District Neighborhood Association from 1995 and, most recently, served as a board member on the association’s Design Review Committee.
Tom is survived by his wife Jean Spraker of Portland, Oregon, his daughter Caitlin Harvey of Glen Allen, Virginia, his mother Martha Chinnery of Sun City Center, Florida, and his brother Andrew (Drew) Harvey of Portland, Oregon.
