Longtime Goleta, CA, resident and community volunteer Mary Jane McCord passed away peacefully on Monday, April 2 at the age of 69. She graduated with a degree in biology from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, OH and lived in Berkeley, CA and Seattle, WA before settling in Goleta in 1967. Mary Jane served many charitable organizations, including the Family Service Agency of Santa Barbara, CALM, the Junior League, and Planned Parenthood, for which she organized and volunteered at the annual book sale for the last 35 years. The sale was recently renamed in her honor. For the last 23 years, Mary Jane also served as a substitute teacher at Laguna Blanca School, which held a celebration of her dedication and contributions to its community in March while she was still well enough to enjoy the occasion. Regardless of the organization, Mary Jane will be remembered as someone who treated everyone with dignity and compassion. Mary Jane is survived by her daughter, Holly McCord Duncan, Holly's husband Gary, and their sons, Andrew, 6, and Matthew, 4; her son, Scott McCord, Scott's wife, Tina, and their son Max, 1 month; and her brother, Dale Gaston and his wife, Mary Gaston. A memorial celebration of Mary Jane's life will take place on Sunday, May 20 at 2pm at Godric Grove in Elings Park. All who were touched by her kindness are welcome and invited to wear a color that reminds them of her. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Planned Parenthood of Santa Barbara Book Sale or the Santa Barbara Humane Society.
