Elizabeth Ann (Liz) Morris '54 died June 28, 2012, at her home in Bayfield, Colorado after a sudden illness. The daughter of archaeologists Earl H. Morris and Ann Axtell Morris, Dr. Morris earned an AB from Antioch College in 1954 and an MA in 1957 from the University of Arizona. She became the SoA’s very first female Ph.D. in 1959 with a dissertation titled Basketmaker Caves in the Prayer Rock District, Northeastern Arizona.
After teaching at Temple University, Dr. Morris joined the faculty at Colorado State University in 1970. There she served as department chair and as director of CSU’s field school. Liz was named a Colorado Council of Professional Archaeologists Fellow in 1992. Upon retirement she moved to Bayfield.
