Alice Wischmeier Mae Knight '49

Alice Mae Knight '49 died suddenly April 3, 2014 at Bishop Spencer Place, Kansas City, Missouri. She was born November 17, 1924 in Burlington, Iowa, to Paul and Amanda (Brandmeyer) Wischmeier. She had a sister, Eileen Wirt, deceased. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, William E. Knight, and several cousins. Alice graduated from Burlington High School, received a BA from Antioch College (Ohio), and earned a Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Kansas. She held life membership in the St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary, Fairfax Hospital Auxiliary in Virginia, and the American Association of University Women. She was also active in the League of Women Voters, St. Paul's Friday Guild (president three years), the Alexandria Colonial Cotillion, Nelly's Needlers at Woodlawn Plantation, the Greater Kansas City Needlepoint Guild, Prairie Planters, the Ball Club of Kansas City (chair couple three years), the Johnson County Retirees group, Kansas City Quilters, and Accent Theater. Alice's varied career included clerk at Emery-Bird-Thayer, secretary at an advertising agency, girl Friday at Channel 5, youth counselor and later Branch Manager for the YWCA, youth counselor for Mattie Rhodes, and executive at Planned Parenthood. A Memorial Service was held on April 15, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 11 East 40th Street, Kansas City, MO 64111, reception following. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest contributions to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or the Cavanaugh Benevolent Care Endowment fund, care of Bishop Spencer Place, 4301 Madison Ave., Kansas City, MO 64111.
