Two Faculty Positions in Cooperative Education
Antioch College invites applications for one assistant professor of cooperative education position(3-year appointment transferable to tenure track) and one full-time instructor of cooperative education position (contract renewable annually) to begin in the summer of 2013. For more than 90 years, a critical component of the Antioch College education model has been the Cooperative Education (Co-op) program, established by former President Arthur E. Morgan. Students complete four to six terms of full-time work in local, national and international settings. The program expands the boundaries of the liberal arts learning environment by providing work opportunities in supervised employment settings, where students learn on the job while also receiving compensation for their efforts. Co-op faculty members contribute to the development, implementation, and assessment of these 12-week employment experiences as well as other experiential education opportunities, including embedded education, as outlined in the Antioch College Curriculum Catalog.
The assistant professor of cooperative education position:
As a member of the Co-op faculty, the successful candidate will provide leadership for the development of cooperative education initiatives in various parts of the country and potentially abroad. The individual will cultivate cooperative relationships with employers; instruct the Work Portfolio courses taken by students during their Co-op terms; provide support for students prior to, during and after their field experiences; document the program’s achievements in order to ensure proper reporting; and coordinate supplemental program activities. This faculty member will be expected to teach occasional campus-based courses. They will work closely with faculty members in the academic divisions, participate in college governance and policy decisions, and hold full responsibilities in faculty committee work. They will also represent the Co-op program on community committees both within the college and among outside groups.
The assistant professor of cooperative education will be expected to maintain an independent line of research, engage in professional practice, or involve the College in other types of off-campus initiatives relating to their area of expertise. The successful candidate will demonstrate a link between their professional endeavors and an array of potential co-op jobs by tracing out a network of contacts relating to employment ideas. The area of expertise is open, but should relate well with one or more of the degree programs that are offered within the College’s broader academic divisions (the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences). Preference will be given to candidates demonstrating expertise in one of the themes covered in the College’s Global Seminar Program (Food, Water, Energy, Health, Governance and Education).
Of particular interest are candidates who have established themselves as thought leaders within the field of national or international education policy. Ideally, the individual selected for this position would be available to co-teach our Global Seminar on Education during the Summer Quarter of 2013 (beginning July 9). Applicants should hold a terminal degree (Ph.D., Ed.D. or MFA), demonstrated experience in higher education and deep knowledge of experiential education.
The cooperative education instructor position:
As a member of the Co-op faculty, the successful candidate will cultivate cooperative relationships with employers; instruct the Work Portfolio courses taken by students during their Co-op terms; provide support for students prior to, during and after their field experiences; document the program’s achievements in order to ensure proper reporting; and coordinate supplemental program activities. The Cooperative Education Instructor will represent the Co-op program on community committees both within the college and among outside groups, contribute to the development of grant proposals, as well as support new and existing cooperative education efforts. This position is available immediately with an initial one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal. A terminal degree (Ph.D., Ed.D. or MFA) is preferred although candidates should also hold at least a master’s degree with five years of directly related experience and a deep knowledge of experiential education. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
Additional qualifications for both positions in cooperative education include experience with cooperative education, service learning or other work-oriented educational programming; familiarity with and commitment to the liberal arts higher education environment; grant writing experience; as well as knowledge of issues relating to a particular field of relevance to the College. Candidates should possess solid organizational skills, be computer literate, have the ability to adapt themselves to new software packages and on-line networking interfaces, be willing to carry out a variety of administrative tasks, and be able to meet a broad range of responsibilities. Adaptability, resourcefulness, a sense of humor and strong communication skills will also be necessary.
Daily responsibilities for both positions include advising and placing students in a wide-range of work experiences; teaching employment skills; ensuring timely communications with employers; working to improve employer effectiveness with co-op students; developing new co-op jobs; and working collaboratively and effectively with the rest of the faculty to meet the objectives of the curriculum. The faculty member will contribute to the development of grant proposals, secure jobs for students and attend alumni meetings as required. They will also be encouraged to carry on professional activities such as writing, speaking, and research relating to their area of expertise, to cooperative and experiential education, and to liberal arts education in general.
In order to elevate the potential of students to bridge cultural and national divides, the college offers second language instruction every term—even when students are engaged in jobs off campus. Those who qualify will be able to take advantage of the opportunity to work, study or volunteer internationally in a country where the student’s second language capability will be put to substantial use. Therefore, in order to support the College’s belief that second language acquisition is important for future student success, we are especially seeking candidates who speak French, Japanese or Spanish.
