TENURE TRACK FACULTY - COOPERATIVE EDUCATION

Antioch College invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in cooperative education. For more than 90 years, a critical component of the Antioch College education model has been the Cooperative Education (Co-op) Program, established by former President Arthur E. Morgan. The program expands the boundaries of the liberal arts learning environment by developing employment opportunities in supervised employment settings where students learn on the job while also receiving compensation for their efforts. Students complete four or five terms of full-time work in local, national and international settings. The tenure-track faculty member is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and assessment of these twelve-week work experiences as well as the Work Portfolio courses associated with them and other experiential education opportunities outlined in the Antioch College Curriculum Catalog.

 

The College is particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals who have distinguished themselves within the discipline of education. As a member of the Co-op team, the tenure-track faculty member provides leadership for the development of cooperative education initiatives in various parts of the country and particular regions abroad. The individual cultivates cooperative relationships with employers; designs and instructs the Work Portfolio courses taken by students during their Co-op terms as well as Co-op preparation courses prior to placement. They also co-teach the College’s Global Seminar on Education once every two years. The faculty member advises students before, during and after their field experiences; documents the program’s achievements in order to ensure proper reporting; and coordinates supplemental program activities. They work closely with faculty members in the academic divisions, participate in college governance and policy decisions, and hold full academic committee responsibilities. They also represent the Co-op program on community committees both within the college and among outside groups.

 

The tenure-track cooperative education faculty member is expected to maintain an independent line of research relating directly to educational policy, social justice, cooperative education, experiential learning or a related area of inquiry. They may engage in professional practice, and/or involve the College in off-campus initiatives relating to their area of expertise. They also demonstrate a link between their professional endeavors and an array of potential co-op jobs by tracing out a network of contacts relating to their employment ideas. Their work should relate well with one or more of the degree programs that are offered within the College’s academic divisions (the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences) or one of the other themes covered in our Global Seminar Program (Food, Water, Energy, Health, Governance and Education). This is a fulltime, tenure-track position with a one-quarter annual research term.

 

Qualifications for the tenure-track faculty position in cooperative education include a terminal degree (Ph.D., Ed.D. or MFA); college-level experience with cooperative education, service learning or other experiential education programming; public speaking skills; familiarity with and commitment to the liberal arts higher education environment; as well as demonstrated achievements within one or more of the above mentioned fields of particular relevance to the College. Candidates should possess solid organizational skills, be computer literate, have the ability to adapt themselves to new software packages and on-line teaching interfaces, be willing to carry out a variety of administrative tasks, and be able to meet a broad range of responsibilities. Adaptability, resourcefulness, a sense of humor and strong communication skills will also be necessary. Additionally, in order to meet curricular needs and expand the current array of international co-op opportunities, the individual should have significant language skill in Spanish, French or Japanese as well as experience living, working or conducting research in areas where one of these languages predominate.
